As we head into the warmest months of the year, why not enjoy a stroll along the beautiful Isle of Wight coast.
Here we’re walking from Shanklin to Sandown, and stopping for a well deserved cuppa and cake along the route.
Distance: 3-6 miles Walk Time: 1.5-3 hours
Start at Shanklin Chine parking at either Vernon Meadows car park (postcode PO376AQ) or Shanklin Esplanade (PO37 6BH)
Walk along Chine Avenue until you reach the top of the cliffs and take a left, so that the sea is on your right.
Walk along the seafront, enjoying the many different local businesses that you pass along the route. You’ll walk past Sandown Pier, Dinosaur Isle, Sandham Gardens and the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary (great stops if you’re walking with kids). Finish as you approach Yaverland. You can either return the same way, or catch a bus back to Shanklin where your car is parked.
On your return, just over half-way along the route, you will come to a set of stairs on your right. These stairs lead you up on to the cliff path where you will find Blueberry’s Café.
Here you can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and a tea cake for just £3.50 with the voucher in this month's Beacon Magazine. Blueberry’s have a mouth-watering range of cakes and refreshments to enjoy — and stunning views over the bay.
From Blueberry’s you can either go back down the same set of stairs and carry on walking along the revetment or you can carry on along the top of the cliff path. While the walk is generally a gentle walk along the esplanade, it does contain both uphill and downhill elements.
