Kids Zone: Spooky Spider's Webs

Get crafty with the kids this Halloween and make these spooky spider’s webs with Sara Whatley

Children simply love Halloween. The combination of a dark spooky night, dressing up and of course, lots of treats, will elicit squeals of delight and fright from even the biggest kids. As Halloween is only one special night a year – always falling on 31 October – it’s lovely to make it stretch a bit further with some fun crafts leading up to it. We like to make cut-out paper pumpkins or ghosts to hang in the windows, and carving pumpkins is an absolute must of course. As is a delicious pumpkin soup and traditional spiced pumpkin pie, yum!

This year we are also going to make these spooky spider’s webs to hang in the windows and dark corners all around the house and garden. Giant spiders optional.

YOU WILL NEED:

4 sturdy twigs cut to roughly the same sizes
A ball of string
Scissors
If you want to make a spider you will need some black pipe cleaners and googly eyes

HOW TO MAKE YOUR SPIDER’S WEB:

Start by making the structure of the web with the sticks. Make a cross with two sticks and bind the string around the centre to hold them, then add in the other sticks at a 45° angle to the cross and bind them in with the string as well. Once the sticks are secure, take the string and wind around the sticks in an anticlockwise direction, winding around each stick to secure as you go.

Spiral your way around, leaving gaps between the string to make it look like a web, tie off the string once you have spiralled all the way to the edge of your final stick. Then cut a long piece of string and tie to the end of a stick to hang your web.

If you want to make a spider to decorate your web you could use black pipe cleaners and some googly eyes if you have some. Eeek!
