Leading companies in the Island’s construction industry have come together to provide a new car park for Sight for Wight, the independent charity providing information and support to visually impaired Islanders.
The charity sought help because the car park at its Newport HQ off Carisbrooke Road had become uneven, potholed and prone to flooding.
With funding from B&Q and help in kind from Reynolds and Read and Wight Building Materials, a new car park with a new access right up to the front door, has now been delivered.
“We are absolutely thrilled – this is going to make such a difference to us all,” said Lisa Hollyhead, Sight for Wight chief executive.
“Over the years the car park had become very uneven and heavily pot-holed which was a problem made worse whenever it rained as many of our visitors could not distinguish a pothole from a puddle.
“As someone living with 88% sight loss myself since birth, the daily stress involved in feeling my way around was really too much.
"We now have a very clear foot route in for cane users and Guide Dogs to follow."
Craig Baughan, Reynolds and Read plant and groundworks manager, added:
“We were privileged to be asked by Sight for Wight for help to improve their car park, which had over time, become unsafe.
"It was great to be involved in a team effort, coming together to help a local charity that does so much for other people.”
