Vectis Band pays tribute to Stalwart

Composer Alan Ingram rehearsing his tribute to Michael with the band this week

Vectis Brass Band is a community organisation based in Ryde and has been entertaining audiences on the Island since 1947.

Earlier this year, the band learned of the passing of one of its founding members, Michael Collis.

Michael joined the band aged 8 and played with the band since its inception until just before his passing.

Michael was a stalwart of the band, always helping encourage of the younger players to learn and love music as well as being such a committed member of the band for such a long time.

As a tribute to Michael, the band's composer in residence, Alan Ingram, has written a new composition titled 'A Song to Michael' which features the tuba section of the band - the instrument Michael played and loved.

Musical Director Jay Taylor said:

"We are truly heartbroken to hear the news of Michael's passing, he was such a kind and generous band member who was so dedicated to the development of brass music on the Island.

"Alan has composed such a beautiful piece of music and we're looking forward to sharing it with our audiences."

The band will play this piece as a tribute at the next concert on Thursday May 30 from 7.30pm at St Saviour's Church in Shanklin.

Entry is free with a raffle, refreshments and a retiring collection for the church bells and the band.

The band will also play at Rylstone Gardens in Shanklin every Thursday evening in June, July and August at 8pm.
