When students at St Blasius Shanklin C of E Primary Academy wanted to make a difference, they all agreed the RSPCA branch on the Isle of Wight was the place they could take action.
After a school council meeting was held to decide on a good cause to help, the children, staff and parents all started collecting donations for the animals at the RSPCA Isle of Wight Animal Centre.
The goods started flooding in and on Wednesday this week a group of pupils from the school delivered bedding, food, toys and even specially knitted jumpers for the centre’s animals.
Pupil Rosie said:
“We had our council meeting and we agreed that the RSPCA needed our help.”
Classmate Harry added:
“We all wanted to help the animals in the RSPCA home because we all love animals.”
The RSPCA Isle of Wight Branch is home to many cats, dogs, rabbits and other pets needing rehoming.
There is also a specialist wildlife unit helping the Island’s wildlife. The local charity relies heavily on public donations to deliver its critical services, receiving no regular funding from the National RSPCA.
Rebecca Busby, Isle of Wight RSPCA fundraiser, said the charity was so grateful for the school’s help.
“We really appreciate when a school and community donates to our animals in need. It was lovely to welcome them at our Animal Centre in Rookley and see how much the animals mean to them.
“It is important that the Island continues to support animal welfare and takes action to make a difference.
"If anyone would like to donate any items, we are particularly looking for cat and dog food at the moment, as we have had an influx of kittens and dogs into our care in recent weeks.”
The RSPCA Isle of Wight Branch is an independently registered charity.
