Sandown Lifeguards joined with the Lighthouse Clinic, and Sandown Town Councillors, to take part in a programme of Skin Cancer Awareness & Prevention, in Sandown's Broadway Centre.
The Beach Lifeguards were all checked over by a dermatologist on the day, with one member of the team being referred for treatment.
With 86% of melanoma skin cancer cases being preventable, 1 in 47 women, and 1 in 36, diagnosed with skin cancer, and people that have had more than 5 incidents of sunburn are more at risk of having melanomas.
Beach Lifeguard Manager, Todd Miller, said:
"It was really important that our team of lifeguards can promote the safe enjoyment of the beach for all residents and visitors to Sandown, and the Island."
"We'd like to thank our colleagues at the Lighthouse Clinic for providing the session and hopefully we can develop this much needed inclusive and informative initiative in the future."
Town Mayor, Alex Lightfoot, added:
"Partnership working has already seen Swim Safe delivered in Sandown, provided accessible wheelchairs, litter picking facilities, and the promotion of taking extra care in sun without spoiling the fun, is very a very positive message."
