Ryde Golfers Tee Off In Spain Aiming To Win National Trophy

A team of golfers are hoping to bring a prestigious national trophy back to the Isle of Wight next week.

The Ryde Golf Club team have already reached the semi-finals of the Annodata National Fives competition for all clubs in the United Kingdom.

On Monday, they fly out to the Jack Nicklaus-designed Montecastillo Golf Club in Spain, to see if they can go all the way to lifting the trophy.

Along with Woburn, Foxhills and Drax golf clubs from the mainland, they have battled their way through to the last four.

Ryde’s team comprises Paul Moreton (captain), Darren Thompson, club captain Steve Tutt, Lee Cawley, Tom McInnes and Richie Harrison.

Two other members, Aidie Adams and Richard Bond, took part in earlier rounds.

They have already beaten seven opponents in the singles matchplay event and have no intentions of stopping now.

Paul Moreton said:

“While it is nice to have got this far and be on the plane to Spain, we think we have a good chance of winning the whole event and bringing a bit of glory for Ryde Golf Club.”

Wightlink Ferries have sponsored their travel and there has also been backing from Wight Ices, Wight Windows, Island Ales, JL Removals and Storage, Gold Plumbing, The Electric Center and Wight Embroidery.

Paul added:

“Club members have also been very supportive and we would like to thank everyone who has got behind us.

“We are grateful to the supporters who are joining us in Spain at their own expense.”

After flying out on Monday, they have practice rounds on Tuesday before the draw takes place for Wednesday’s semi-finals. If they win that match, they will be straight into Thursday’s final.

If not, it is the third-place play-off. Phil Delaney, Wightlink commercial director, said:

“We are delighted to support Ryde golfers who are aiming for glory in Spain.

“The Island is home to so many great sports people and a win in this top tournament would be a great father in the Ryde club’s cap.”
