Isle Of Wight Artist Competes In Sky’s ‘Landscape Artist Of The Year’

Island-based creative, Andy Ashdown, is one of just 48 artists selected from more than 2,000 applicants to compete in the current series of ‘Landscape Artist of the Year’ on Sky Arts.

The episode featuring Andy’s heat will be broadcast this Wednesday (February 14) and takes place in Kent, where the competing artists are given just 4 hours to paint a view of the impressive Hever Castle; all vying for a place in the semi-final.

In addition to a senior role with the National Trust, Andy works as a designer and artist, specialising in landscape paintings of the breathtaking scenery around the Island.

He was selected to take part in the series on the strength of his submission painting of the beach at Colwell Bay.

Andy said:

“After being a fan of the programme for years, I finally took the plunge and applied to take part.

"To be selected from so many talented artists is amazing” 

With a style that is typically very detailed, Andy’s landscape paintings are conveyed in intricate pen-and-ink and watercolour, so he had to adapt to the demanding timescale.

He added:

“The day was hard work; the 4-hour time limit is a challenge and it certainly adds to the pressure.

"But it was an incredible experience and it was a joy to meet everyone involved in making the series, and the members of the public who came along to support us all.”

Andy will be seen competing against seven other artists on the day with a winner being selected by three prominent judges.
