‘Great Expectations’: Cowes Enterprise College Students Meet Great-Great-Grandson Of Charles Dickens

Year 11 Graphics students at Cowes Enterprise College, part of Ormiston Academies Trust, recently met the great-great-grandson of Charles Dickens, to receive their published copies of Spy Cats, Grandude & Other Short Stories.

The book features 13 imaginative stories written by Year 5 students from across the Isle of Wight as part of the 2024 IW Story Festival writing competition.

These stories were brought to life with artistic illustrations created by talented Cowes Enterprise College’s Graphics students, whose creative contributions have been professionally published in the book.

Students enjoyed discussing their creative process with the literary legend’s relative, Ian Dickens, and share the inspiration behind their designs, alongside hearing first-hand how their work has helped showcase the incredible literary talent of local young writers.

This project was not only an exciting, real-world experience for the academy’s students but also an opportunity to strengthen community ties and encourages a deeper appreciation for literature and art among young people on the Isle of Wight.

Rachel Kitley, Principal at Cowes Enterprise College, said:

“We are so proud of our Graphics students for their dedication and creativity. Meeting Ian Dickens and receiving their published books is a fantastic way to celebrate their achievement.

"This experience, supporting the creativity of young authors on the Isle of Wight, is a collaboration to be proud of.”
