The Isle of Wight Red Squirrel Trust has named its four year-old winner of a competition to name the new mascot for the charity.

Goldie is the name chosen by randomised selection for the new red squirrel mascot, made by Bernie.

The competition proved popular with the children aged 12 years-old and under, with more than 40 picking a name.

The name was chosen by Cassie Nunn, 4, from Shanklin.

Cassie said she chose Goldie because squirrels have golden hair like hers.

She likes exploring the woods and finding wildflowers, her favourite is wild garlic.

Cassie goes to Nettlestone preschool where she has been busy learning about bees.

The IW Red Squirrel Trust chair, Helen Butler MBE, said:

"Goldie is a good name for the mascot and Cassie is a delightfully cheerful little girl."

The prize included a red squirrel soft toy, a book, a cushion, a red squirrel necklace, pencil and notebook.
