Charlton And The Chocolate Factory: Residents Of Cowes Home Celebrate Annual Event

A Cowes residential home has take its residents to chocolate heaven as part of an annual national event.

Last Friday (July 7) marked World Chocolate Day and the residents of Old Charlton House Residential Home marked the occasion in style.

The day began with residents dipping strawberries in chocolate to set and eat after their lunch - a task which proved found this very tricky as all they wanted to do was eat them as they went along!

During the afternoon the residents looked at pictures of old chocolate bar labels and posters selling them.

This prompted much discussion and reminiscing about chocolate and sweets that they used to enjoy in their younger days.

Residents found it amusing that the posters advertising chocolate used the phrase “builds bone and muscle”, but as Janet pointed out – we know it builds fat!

They took part in a chocolate quiz, testing the chocolatey knowledge of the residents. Once each answer was revealed, it led to more discussion and reminiscing.

The winner was Marilyn, who was overjoyed with her chocolate prize, although it was a closely run thing.

The highlight of the day was of course, the chocolate fondue. Residents enjoyed dipping strawberries, raspberries, banana, shortbread squares and marshmallows into bowls of melted dark chocolate.

Resident, June, had never had a chocolate fondue before and proclaimed it “rather nice”.

Another resident, Brenda, said “this fondue has been absolutely heavenly.”

There have been requests for another fondue in the future - and that is just from the staff!
