A legendary figure from Ryde sadly passed away yesterday (Sunday.)
Town Crier Steve King served the town for 12 years.
He hung up his bell in late 2021, with his final event taking place at a Women's Institute Centenary event held at Newport Minster.
A post on the Historic Ryde Society Facebook page stated:
"Yesterday, our Town Crier and friend Steve King died.
"Steve was a real Ryde boy and man who gave so much to and for the town.
"Thank you Steve - you will always be fondly remembered.
"Our deepest sympathy to his wife, Edna, and family."
During his time as Ryde Town Crier, Steve opened 13 shops and was on duty at 11 weddings.
After short stints in similar roles in Yarmouth and Southampton, he returned to his first love - ringing the bell in Ryde.
A resident of Ryde said:
"Mr King was the sweetest soul and a truly lovely man - he will be sadly missed.
"I recall his presence across the streets, his immutable vibration and enthusiasm for the town.
"He will be sadly missed by the scores of residents who grew to love him."
