The corner plot on Newport's St James' Street has opened its doors to customers again today (Thursday), with a local independent butchers at its helm.
Family-run business 'The Butcher Shop', which already has a premises on Cowes High Street, has taken over the building — in a bid to provide Newport with a much-missed local butchers.
The building has been empty since W.W. Woodford & Sons closed its Newport branch last year. Before them, E.E Downer had been at the helm for more than 80 years.
Owner, Andy Brooke, told Isle of Wight Radio:
"Hopefully the people of Newport will be glad to have a butchers back in the local area.
"We offer free delivery around the Island when you spend over £25."
The Butcher Shop sells lots of local produce, including Isle of Wight beef and lamb, 32-day dry aged beef, pies and sausage rolls from Scarrots Lane Bakery, sauces and fresh Isle of Wight vegetables, among many other food items.
