Isle Of Wight's Vectis Rugby Club Wants Youngsters To Sign Up

Youngsters of all ages on the Ise of Wight are being invited to sign up to Vectis Rugby Club, the home of youth rugby on the Island.

The not for profit organisation is made up of dedicated volunteers who love the sport and recognise the transferable skills it teaches youngsters.

From life skills like teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship, the U15 coach says there’s a “place for everyone in a rugby team.”

Simon Lythgoe told Isle of Wight Radio:

“The way we coach rugby, we encourage creativity...And then there is the social side, we have kids increasing their confidence playing one of the ultimate team games because on or off the ball everyone is doing something...They also learn to be good losers and humble in victory.

“Of course those natural athletes who are looking to be the next Owen Farrell or Emily Scarratt we will of course welcome but what’s really good about rugby is there is a place for everyone, all sort of shapes and sizes. Everybody in the squad will get 50 per cent game time and everyone will get something from it.”

Simon got involved in rugby from a young age at school and joined the middle school rugby team, prior to doing trials for Hampshire.

The three main RFC’s in Wootton, Ventnor and Sandown and Shanklin (and Ryde School) allow them to use their grounds and keep their equipment there.

Simon says he is grateful for the community spirit from parents, coaches, the children and local businesses that also provide sponsorship.

The U15 squad (year 10) trains every Sunday at 10.310am until 12pm at the Sandown and Shanklin RFC ground on Station Approach.

Meanwhile, if you are someone who wants to give up their time to coach, you are also urged to get in touch.
