Care in the Garden, based at Palmers Brook Community Nursery in Wootton is a not-for-profit organisation set up to create work opportunities for adults with additional needs on the Isle of Wight.
It's funded by what is grown and made on site. Every pound you spend at the nursery helps to continue their great work.
As well as the work on site, Care in the Garden provides opportunities for its workers to get out into the community, providing jobs such as lawn mowing, weed removal – as well as work placements within other organisations.
THE MOWER MEN
As well as maintaining the nursery site, The Mower Men have several other jobs on the go at the moment.
They really enjoy the opportunity to get out in the community and work hard. They have all done their initial training at the nursery, and always come out with a member of staff to assist them. Pete and Neil are the supervisors, and each morning, they collect their teams and head out for the day, maintaining grounds in both residential and commercial properties.
Care in the Garden risk assesses all jobs and provides everybody with protective clothing.
The Mower Men also get out and about helping with planting contracts for Red Funnel, Whippingham Parish Council, East Cowes Town Council and Newport Parish Council. They plant and maintain troughs, baskets and public borders in and around these towns.
Look out for Rob and the "Mower Men" team in their new crew van. They love their job and offer a good service at a very competitive price, so if you would like them to come and cut your grass for you, to keep the area surrounding your business tidy, they would love to come and help. PLANTS FOR ALL SEASONS
When Care in the Garden moved to Palmers Brook Nursery in 2012, the main aims were to support people who need a little extra help to work, and to grow and sell amazing plants at amazing prices.
Every year since then, Care in the Garden have added another polytunnel to cope with increasing demand. Twice a year they have their famous plug plant weekends, where you can buy plug plants to grow on in your own garden. The shop and tunnels are jammed full of a great variety of plants, both basket and bedding, to brighten your home for the summer. They also sell a variety of shrubs and perennials which will give you pleasure year after year.
Care in the Garden begin growing plants from early February. You can find all your favourite flowers in stock, from bedding plants to superb trailers for your baskets, also a selection of vegetable plants, shrubs, perennials and climbers for those larger areas in your garden.
Bulbs for spring will be in stock at great prices, and they will soon be followed by roses, raspberry canes etc.
From August onwards, you can find something to fill the gaps in your borders. They will be growing autumn violas, pansies and wallflowers — all winter hardy so they will take your garden through from the end of the summer to Christmas and beyond.
