Ryde School teacher and Olympic athlete Nick Percy has officially qualified for this summer’s World Championships in Tokyo, following an exceptional performance in Oklahoma, USA.

Competing at the prestigious “Throw Town” meet, Percy delivered a sensational discus throw of 67.86 metres, extending his personal best by 13 centimetres and breaking his own Scottish national record—a record rooted in his birthplace.

The performance not only marked a new milestone in Percy’s decorated athletics career but also met the World Championships Automatic Qualification Standard, confirming his place on the global stage once again.

Known for his dedication on and off the field, Nick’s journey to Oklahoma was not just about elite sport.

As a valued teacher at Ryde School with Upper Chine, Percy balances the rigours of professional athletics with shaping the lives of young people back home.

His return next week will see him back in the classroom and immersed in school life, even as preparations intensify for one of the biggest events of his sporting career.

Nick credits much of his progress to the supportive community around him.

“I’m so grateful for everyone who helps make this journey possible,” he shared. “
"From coaches and family to colleagues and friends, their belief means everything.”

He extended special thanks to Wightlink, whose continued support has made his travel to and from the Isle of Wight seamless during this demanding season.

As he looks ahead to Tokyo, Nick carries with him not only the pride of personal achievement but also the spirit of an island and school community cheering him on.

His record-breaking throw is a testament to years of hard work, resilience, and passion—and his story continues to inspire both on the international field and in the classroom
